When Costs Rise but Celebrations Must Go On

When Costs Rise but Celebrations Must Go On

Have you noticed that throwing a wedding or event in Nigeria feels more expensive than it used to? You’re not imagining it. Inflation has been real. As of October 2025, the official inflation rate in Nigeria eased to 16.05 percent, down from peaks above 30 percent last year, but prices for basics like food, transport, decorations, and fuel have already risen steeply.

That means for many couples, their daily needs of food and shelter trumps over the need to have a lavish celebration and therefore their event budget almost remains stagnant.

Our personal favourite is a Thursday wedding. For some reason, it just feels right. You can get good deals by highlighting to everyone that it is a weekday wedding, but it is close enough to the weekend to make it meaningful.

  1. Re-think the menu and guest experience

Food and beverage drive a big part of the budget. Offer simpler footprint menus, smart combinations instead of extravagant spreads, or culturally rich but cost-friendly food options. Clients still get good taste and atmosphere for less. For instance, a 4-item menu consisting of one rice dish, one soup with different swallow options, one continental dish, and one international dish is a smart of way of catering to different taste buds without breaking the bank.

  1. Provide transparency and trust.

Show clients what costs are variable (food, decoration, transport) and what stays fixed (venue fee, coordination, planning). Give transparent quotes early. Clients appreciate clarity especially now and even though you don’t necessarily owe them, gently explain to them how much things have affected the event industry too.

4 Build strong relationships with suppliers and vendors and leverage on those relationships.

Try to negotiate stable pricing or partial bundles for services like décor, catering, and rentals. Staying flexible and maintaining trust with suppliers helps when costs fluctuate.

5. Focus on client communication and realistic expectations

Times have changed, and many clients will understand price inflation if you explain honestly. Instead of overpromising glamour, give value that matches what they can afford today.

Why this approach matters

When the economy shifts, events don’t have to end. People still crave celebrations, memories, and community. As event planners and vendors, adapting to cost pressures means staying relevant while still delivering joy.

Long-term, businesses that learn to balance cost realities with smart planning and honest communication will likely build stronger reputations. They’ll serve budgets that changed with inflation and still deliver value.
